Silver is one of the coolest metals used to design gorgeous accessories and jewellery that add versatility and style to your everyday dressing. However, along with buying silver, often comes the fear of maintaining the shine of the metal as silver tends to easily react with the environment to give out the oxidized colour which can spoil the entire charm of the metal. There are several silver cleansers available in the market, however most of them are with a highly acidic base which causes the metal to erode and lose its value in the long run.
Here are some simple home remedies to keep that silver shining and intact for a longer period of time:
Squeeze out a little toothpaste and use this to clean your silver jewellery until it is perfectly clean. Brush the paste well all over the piece of jewel until you can see the black color coming off the jewel. Wash well and pat dry to get shiny silver back.
Using Aluminium foil
To clean your silver jewellery, just line a bowl with some aluminium foil and fill up the bowl with some hot water. Add a little detergent powder to it. Let the jewellery soak in this water for a minute. Remove and rinse well and let it dry in the air. A chemical ion exchange that occurs in this process helps in cleaning the silver well.
To remove the built up layer oxidizing your silver make a thick paste of baking soda with about 2 tablespoons of water. Use a damp cloth and apply this paste, rub gently and rinse in cold water. Allow the jewellery to air dry. Do not use this method of cleansing if you have silver jewellery that is studded with semi precious stones and the baking soda can cause the glue on them to loosen up the stones.
Do not use this technique very frequently however, it works as a quick way to get your silver trinkets shining bright. Soak up the silver in a solution made of half cup ammonia and 1 cup of warm water. Gently wipe the jewellery clean and allow it to air dry. Avoid using this technique for jewellery containing precious stones and gems as the ammonia can erode the shine and lustre of the stones.
